FAQ

Where is your office?

I am licensed in New Jersey and Florida. https://flhealthsource.gov/telehealth/

Since the pandemic, I’ve been seeing all my patients online. What began as a necessity has evolved into a happy accident, as my patients seem to enjoy the convenience. It also allows us more flexibility with scheduling – I’ve seen patients at all hours, day or night!

I also offer in-person Running Buddy sessions (more on that below).

What are your hours?
That’s the beauty of telehealth – I will work with you to find the best time for us to meet.
Do you take insurance?

Yes! Oscar Health, United Health, Cigna, Oxford, Aetna, Signa, Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

What if I don’t have insurance?

I offer sliding scale sessions for uninsured clients or clients whose insurance doesn’t cover mental health.

How long is a session?

Sessions are 50 minutes.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Call me at (973) 913-4976 or email blackbooktherapy@gmail.com to set up your free 20-minute consultation.

Is the free 20-minute consultation necessary?
Yes. I respect your time, and this is a way to determine if we are a good fit for each other.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for a notice 24 hours in advance.
Do you see men?
Absolutely! Oh, should I elaborate? I love the menfolk! Yes, men and male-identified clients are part of my practice.
What is run/walk/talk?

That’s when we meet for a run or a walk… and we talk. That’s your session.

I advocate getting out and getting moving for all my patients, and this is a great way to start. I’m not a fitness coach by any means – just someone who has experienced the mental-health benefits of exercise.

I began running during the pandemic, and I absolutely love it. I vowed not to become one of those annoying running evangelists, but life had other plans. Ask me about medium vs. low-cushion socks sometime… or don’t!

What’s a deadline doula?
That’s when I help writers give birth to their work. Writing can be a fraught and messy process. It often involves tears, blood, and personal demons. With 30+ years as a writer and editor, I can offer practical feedback AND help you navigate the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that come with the creative process.
What’s a GAW?
GAW stands for Grown-Ass Woman. It’s when you as a female – or female-identified person – step into your full power. Usually, it’s the power to stop people-pleasing – to say NO to others and YES to yourself.
What do you know about d/s, fetish, and kink?

In my mid-20s, I worked as a professional dominatrix at one of Manhattan’s most notorious S&M parlors. It began as a freelance writing assignment and eventually inspired me to become a therapist. In the dungeon, I bore witness to the lusts, fantasies, and fears of my clients. Having people trust me with their secret inner worlds was incredibly gratifying – and humbling.

Over the years, I’ve written extensively about d/s, fetish, kink, polyamory… the glorious spectrum of human sexuality.

What are your credentials?
I’m an LPC, LCADC, and a GAW – Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and Grown-Ass Woman.
Are you qualified to treat abuse of substances and other uncontrolled behaviors?
Yes. As an LCADC, I’m trained to help clients struggling with recovery or clients whose lives are impacted by someone else’s uncontrolled behaviors. Ultimately, it’s about stepping away from things that don’t serve you and embracing a healthier way of life.
